Emily Cheung

As a dancer, teacher and choreographer, Emily Cheung devotes her life to dance. Emily began her studies at the renowned Royal Academy of Dance in London, England, received her degree in Fine Arts at York University in Toronto and continued her training at the internationally acclaimed Dance Academy in Beijing. Returning to Toronto, she completed a second degree in Education and is currently working on her master's degree in Arts and Dance.

Emily Cheung has starred in first roles and as a soloist in numerous shows such as: Land of Cards, Iron Road, Fringe Festival, Dance Ontario, and CanAsian Festival. Emily's interests in dance styles vary from Indian, African, Latin and Chinese dance to ballet, modern and jazz. Emily fuses these vastely different dance forms building bridges between Western and Eastern cultures.

Emily Cheung is involved in the Chinese community and volunteers with associations such as the Chinese Cultural Center and the Toronto Chinese Dance Company. As the Associate Artistic Director of Little Pear Garden Collective, Emily also develops and promotes traditional Chinese dance in her adopted city of Toronto.

Favouring the histories of Indian and Chinese dance, Emily sees dance as an ancient reflection of civilization and as one of the oldest forms of art. As a unique means of intercultural communication, she hopes to be understood by a large public and to reflect the multiculturalism of contemporary Canadian society.

Emily Cheung's talents have been acclaimed many times, notably in the year 2000. In Vancouver's North American Competition of Chinese Dance, Emily was the recipient of three awards of Excellency. Emily Cheung's choreography and her work has since been associated with great Toronto creations such as Spring Lantern II, Lantern Dance and Within...Wip, winning over both the critics, and the public.
