With more than ten years of professional experience and a dozen outstandingly original choreographies, Hideo Arai has affirmed his uniqueness as a Japanese dancer and choreographer. He is one of the rare contemporary artists who has based his art of dance on the Japanese movement techniques of Noguchi Taisou. Founded by Michizo Noguchi, this gymnastic practice borrows the various movements which bring to life the natural world in order to integrate them in a search for improvement of body expression and movement.
Hideo Arai decided to invest himself in the art of dance in 1987. After two years of artistic practice, he began to study dance under Michizo Noguchi, an expert in the movements of the body. These master classes allowed Hideo Arai to acquire the tools necessary to enrich and personalize his own style of dance. Specializing in the Noguchi Taisou technique, he regularly teaches in various workshops held throughout Japan and directs his own company, Dance-Lab KARADAKARA.
A true international artist, Hideo has performed many shows in Asia, Europe and North America. He has gained much acclaim in Canada at the Fringe Festival of Independent Dance Artists of Toronto (1997,1999) and in the Shared Habitat Festival of Art and the Environment (2002). Inclined to collaborate with many dancers and musicians, he has worked with artists such as Goro Namerikawa, Mari Osanai, Peter Chin, and Gerry Graduer. His projects have been frequently supported by Japan-Canada Fund, Tokyo International Foundation and Japan Foundation.
