Geneviève La

A resident of Montreal for now more than 10 years, dancer and choreographer Geneviève La is rooted as much in the modern Francophone Quebecois society as in traditional Vietnamese culture. Her work as a dancer-choreographer is influenced by her professional training at Les Ateliers de Danse Moderne de Montréal (LADMMI), her studies in fine arts, and more recently, in kinesiology (McGill University) and osteopathy (University of Wales).

Her many travels, her curiosity for life and her self initiated research in different domains, such as psychology, anthropology, spiritual studies and the various healing arts have also greatly influenced her work. Mesmerized by the wild and wise forces of life, her approach is strongly embodied in dance and deeply poetic. As a dancer, Geneviève La has worked for choreographers such as Irèni Stamou, Roger Sinha, Mélanie Demers, Jean-François Déziel, Brigitte Haenjtens and Louise Bédard. Active and constantly stimulated by the force of bodily movements, she also participates on a regular basis in dance improvisation events: Les Événements de la Pleine Lune, with Danse-Cité.

As a choreographer, Geneviève La’s main interest is with the human identity and for her; dance creates a way to dialogue with you that is above and beyond words. We are a witness to her energetic expressions of fundamental existential themes where she unites vulnerability and force. Her works have been seen in Montreal, Quebec and Saigon. Her latest pieces, « Little Prayers/Petites prières » and « Roots and Wings/Des racines et des ailes » have been warmly acclaimed by critics and audiences alike. A highly talented improviser, she works presently with the director and photographer, Véro Boncompagni as well as with the actor, Jean-François Casabonne in Musica Nocturna, a piece that will be presented in 2008 (Danse-Cité).
