Khadija Baker

Artist of multiple talents, Khadija Baker developed her work along a journey which began in the Kurdish city of Amoude, Syria that lead to the sinuous banks of the St. Lawrence river. Her inspiration draws from her expansive knowledge in design and visual arts, Kurdish and Syrian culture, Eastern traditions and American culture, the motionless time of painting and the renewed time of cinema animation.

After leaving her native village during her adolescence, Khadija Baker pursued her education in Damascus, an ancient city recognized as one of the cradles of civilization. She obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Arts in 1996, which she complemented with a Master’s Degree in Interior Design. Soon after arriving in Montreal in 2001, Khadija worked as a graphic designer before undertaking a Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Arts at Concordia University.

Khadija Baker is the recipient of many scholarships including the Scholarship for Special Projects from the Fine Arts Students Association (FASA) at Concordia (2005 & 2006), the In Bourse Scholarship - Arab World (2006), and the George Balcony Bursary for Painting and Drawing (2007). She will start her Master’s degree in 2008 at Central St-Martins University of the Arts (London). Baker has exhibited in Montreal, Lebanon, and Syria. She did a residency and performance at the MAI (Montréal, arts interculturels) in 2007, and most recently she was selected for the visual art program solo show at the MAI (Montréal, arts interculturels) 2008-2009.
