Pelin Yazar Cañez

Pelin Yazar Cañez was born in 1969 in Istanbul, the capital city of three empires that are the essence in the history of art. She was raised amongst statues and relics of Christian churches from the Roman’s Constantinople in the Byzantine era that the Ottoman Empire then transformed into lavish mosques. Living in the meeting place between the Occident and the Orient, those from Istanbul like Pelin, benefit from a location that is rich in history and culture and where diverse influences mix and intersect.

As in her city, Pelin follows two artistic directions. One direction drove her to painting at the University of Marmara with the master, Nevhiz Tanyeli where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Painting and Education. The second direction took her to the University of Istanbul where she pursued photography, studied with the artist Ahmet Keskin, obtained her masters in Fine Arts, and received the teachings of the venerable master, Lütfü Cülcül. As a result, Pelin Yazar Cañez specializes in Arts Education with a particular focus on children. She has been hired by different institutions and has created and taught several educative workshops in Turkey as well as in North America.

Pelin Yazar Cañez artistic style is influenced by colour and motifs from impressionistic paintings and reveals luminous landscapes that are marked by accentuated contrasts. She lived in the United States before choosing to move to Montreal. Her works have been exhibited on several occasions notably in Chicago in 1999 at the Turkish American Association for Cultural Exchange; in New York in 2001 for the 20th Annual Festival of the Federation of Turkish American Associations; in Middletown, Ohio in 2000 at the Middfest International Festival; and in Rivière-du-Loup in 2007 for La Fête culturelle familiale.
