Shuni Tsou

Shuni Tsou is a bamboo flautist classically trained in the fields of Beijing opera and Chinese classical music. Well versed in the traditions from her native Taiwan, at the National Junior College of Performing Arts, Shuni brought her talents to an international audience at the age of 13, winning several national flute competitions. She moved to England, where she obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in music at the University of York before completing a Masters degree in Ethnomusicology at the University of Maryland.

Formerly based in New York City, Shuni performed with the renowned ensemble Music from China and collaborated with contemporary music figures such as John Zorn, Butch Morris, Oliver Lake and Brandon Ross, while appearing in several sound recordings. Currently living in Montreal, she has continues to build her unique sonic vocabulary, making her pioneer in the realm of dizi (Chinese bamboo flutes) improvisation. The musical style of Shuni Tsou is best described as a spontaneous passion fused with the elegant sophistication of East Asian traditions.

Shuni Tsou has been invited as featured artist to perform at the Venice Biennial, the Taiwan National Theatre and Concert Hall, the Vision Festival, the Rockefeller Center, the Festival Accès Asie of Montreal, the Festival Multi-Montreal Music and the Smithsonian Folklife Festival. In addition to an invitation to play at Princeton University, Shuni gave a live performance in an interview with John Schaffer in the WNYC radio program SoundCheck. In 2004, she received the Young Artist Grant awarded by the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities.
