Montreal, April 3rd 2008 - In the Festival Accès Asie’s 13th edition, Tangente presents Connection, a dance performance featuring choreographer/dancer, Jung-Ah Chung from Vancouver and L’heure bleue, a piece by choreographer/dancer Geneviève La from Montreal. Based on the force of spirituality, this is a unique opportunity to witness the meeting of Korean grace with Vietnamese elegance. Discovering two new creations, this evening is rooted in their common desire to innovate and to be inspired by tradition.
Connection arose from the desire to create an artistic dialogue. Jung-Ah Chung’s work is centered on the liberating process that goes beyond limits and connects with the supernatural forces. This choreography reflects a Shaman whose symbolic mediation between the natural to the supernatural worlds reaches a heightened universal consciousness. Geneviève La’s L’heure bleue is inspired on the rites of passage. She invites us into a voyage that carries an innocence to unknown lands where dreams and reality meet. We are a witness to her expressions of existential themes and how she unites vulnerability and force. Her movements weave a parallel between modern culture and primitive ritual.
Jung-Ah Chung was born in South Korea and has immersed herself in all aspects of her creations ranging from costumes to lighting. She studied at the Seoul School of Arts and Music and received a bachelor’s degree in dance from Seoul’s Ewha Women University in 1993. Following her studies, she graced the Asian and European stages as a dancer and a choreographer. After immigrating to British Columbia in the late 90’s, Jung-Ah Chung has since worked with numerous dance companies such as the Victoria Ballet, the Tripod Dance Collective, the Out of the Box Productions, the Suddenly Dance Theatre, the Wen Wei Dance and the Battery Opera. Jung-Ah has also produced her own works such as Shape, A shout of Joy, On the Way and Woman in the House that was presented in Seoul in 1998.
A Montrealer for now more than 10 years, Geneviève La shares her heritage with Quebec and Vietnam. Her choreographies and movements are influenced by her training at Les Ateliers de danse moderne de Montréal (LADMMI), her studies in fine arts, and more recently, in kinesiology (McGill University) and osteopathy (University of Wales). Geneviève La has danced for choreographers such as Iréni Stamou, Roger Sinha, Mélanie Demers, Jean-François Déziel, Brigitte Haenjtens and Louise Bédard. She has also participated at the re-launch of Évènements de la pleine lune with Danse-Cité. As a choreographer, Geneviève La’s work is strongly associated with questions of human identity in a dialogue above and beyond words. Her more recent works, Petites prières and Des racines et des ailes have received excellent reviews and responses.
